‘COMpact broadband FIlters at C and Ku band based on Dielectric materials ”  ESA project for the development and space assessment of miniaturised C and Ku RF filters based on dielectric materials (ESA Artes Advanced Technology, Contract O/1-9737/19/NL/NR)   OBJECTIVES The objective is to design, produce and test compact broadband C-band and Ku-band input filters based on dielectric materials. The use of advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing (AM) will be exploited with the aim of optimizing the geometry of the final piece, improving its performance and minimizing mass and dimensions. The use of additive manufacturing would also make the realization phase of the various sub-parts more efficient, for example minimizing the number of sub-parts to be assembled for the final device. The aim is to reduce the volume of the C-band and Ku-band input filters by 50%, compared to the current reference standard, while maintaining substantially unchanged all the electrical performance parameters with respect to the current state-of-the-art. RF Microtech has been awarded a new ESA ARTES AT project entitled COKKO ‘COmpact Ku/Ka-band filters for On-board processor-based payloads’ The project goal is the development and space assessment of miniaturised Ku– and Ka-band RF filters integrating a wide-band differential interface for on-board digital signal processors. ‘COmpact Ku/Ka-band filters for On-board processor-based payloads’ ESA project for the development and space assessment of miniaturised Ku- and Ka-band RF filters integrating a wide-band differential interface for on-board digital signal processors (ESA Artes Advanced Technology, Contract AO/1-9717/19/NL/NM)   OBJECTIVES Miniaturising the broadband filters and implementing differential interfaces to the ADCs and DACs (e.g. by integrating baluns) will significantly impact the size of analogue pre- and post-processors. Up to 30% size reduction could be achieved by combining advanced design techniques with three-dimensional implementation techniques such as Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) or multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (PCB). At the same time, due attention must be paid to implementing good gain and phase stability and tracking through the different analogue signal processing chains, which is important in digital beam forming applications.
